New Footpath in Yarra Street

New Footpath in Yarra Street

We received this request from Sebastian today:

My name is Sebastian and I am part of the advocacy team at Melbourne High School's Railway Interest Group. One initiative we are currently undertaking is the advocacy for an additional footpath on the western side of Yarra St, adjacent to South Yarra Station. This will benefit local residents, shoppers and school students as the existing footpath on the eastern side is narrow, congested and often blocked by obstacles such as rubbish bins, making it potentially inaccessible to those with disabilities. Before and after school it is frequently overcrowded with students, an unpleasant experience for shoppers and other members of the public and forcing people to walk unsafely on the road. We are hoping to convince Stonnington City Council to construct a footpath on the western side of the road, which would help to reduce overcrowding, improve safety and benefit the local community and visitors to the shopping strip by creating a more inviting space for pedestrians. We also do not believe it would negatively impact road traffic or require any parking spaces to be removed.

We have created a petition on change.org (https://www.change.org/p/build-a-footpath-on-the-western-side-of-yarra-st-south-yarra) for supporters to sign.

If you would like more information on the proposal, feel free to check out our information document at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oGhNNTE1jfl4wjtfA8Qe3lB7yGVpLT5v/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=100861995601887294865&rtpof=true&sd=true.

Kind regards,
Sebastian
